  1. A luminous cloud of gas and dust 1,500 light
  2. years away, in the constellation Orion, from
  3. which stars are forming. It is about 15 light
  4. years in diameter, and contains enough gas to
  5. make a cluster of thousands of stars. At the
  6. nebula's centre is a group of hot young
  7. stars, called the Trapezium, which make the
  8. surrounding gas glow. The nebula is visible
  9. to the naked eye as a misty patch below the
  10. belt of Orion.
